Mandatory insurance increased the total charge by over $1,200 for a 20-day period. I would describe my experience as a scam despite Expedia showing substantially lower prices.

I booked a premium SUV for $698 and was given a lower-class vehicle. The final bill came to $1,136 — over $400 more than booked, with charges that don't resemble the original agreement.

They did not have the vehicle we booked, charged us for it anyway, then charged another grand for insurance. We paid double tolls because they gave us a van instead of the SUV we reserved.

BEWARE of Economy car rental. Be prepared to pay 3 times more than what you signed up for because of hidden insurance cost. That ruined our first day of vacay.

List prices on Expedia rarely include mandatory liability insurance (LI). Travelers who email two or more companies for itemized quotes — LI, taxes, deposit, CDW separated — report fewer surprises at the counter.
Low aggregator scores often mean unexpected fees at pickup, not bad cars. A written breakdown before you fly is the fix.
